Your AC Is On But Blowing Hot Air?
In a DMV summer, hot air from your AC is an emergency. Before you panic, check these common causes — several are fixable in minutes.
When Hot Air from Your AC Is an Emergency
Check how many of these apply to your home:
The Data Is Clear
DMV summers regularly hit 95°F+ with extreme humidity. At these temperatures, indoor conditions become dangerous within hours for seniors, young children, and pets. A non-functioning AC during a DMV heat wave is a health emergency — heat-related illness visits to DC-area emergency rooms spike 300% during July and August.
Why Your AC Is Blowing Warm Air
Thermostat Set to HEAT or Fan Set to ON
The most common (and easiest to fix) cause. Check that your thermostat is set to COOL mode with the fan set to AUTO. If the fan is set to ON instead of AUTO, it blows air continuously — including when the compressor isn't running. That air feels warm because it's just room-temperature air being recirculated.
Frozen Evaporator Coil
A frozen coil blocks all airflow, so only warm air comes through the vents. Causes include dirty filters, dirty ducts restricting airflow, or low refrigerant. Turn the AC off, set the fan to ON to melt ice, and check the filter. If the coil keeps freezing after a filter change, dirty ducts or refrigerant issues are likely.
Disconnected or Leaking Ductwork
In DMV homes with ductwork in attics or crawl spaces, connections can come loose. When a supply duct disconnects, cooled air dumps into the attic while hot attic air gets pulled into the duct system. You get hot air from certain vents while the AC works overtime.
Outdoor Unit Not Running
If the indoor fan is blowing but the outdoor compressor unit isn't running, you'll get warm air. Check the outdoor unit — is it running? Check the disconnect switch and breaker. If the breaker has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, call for service — a short circuit or failed compressor is likely.
Steps to Get Your AC Cooling Again
Our professional process addresses the root cause — not just the symptoms.
Quick DIY Checks
Verify thermostat is set to COOL/AUTO. Check and replace the air filter. Verify the outdoor unit is running. Check the circuit breaker. These fix 30% of "AC blowing hot air" calls.
Professional Duct Inspection
If DIY checks don't solve it, we inspect the duct system for disconnections, leaks, or obstructions that are preventing cooled air from reaching your rooms.
Duct Cleaning and Repair
Dirty ducts restrict airflow to the coil (causing freezing) and leak conditioned air. We clean the system and seal any disconnected or damaged duct sections.
System Performance Verification
We measure supply air temperatures and airflow at each register to confirm the system is cooling properly after repairs.

"They showed me the camera footage of what was in our ducts. I couldn't believe it. The difference after cleaning was immediate."

What You Can Expect
Frequently Asked Questions
Three quick checks in order: (1) Thermostat — make sure it's set to COOL mode with the fan on AUTO, not ON. (2) Air filter — a clogged filter is the #1 cause. Pull it out and check. (3) Outdoor unit — go outside and verify the compressor is actually running. These three checks solve the problem 30% of the time without a service call.
